November 7, 2005—PASO ROBLES—Eberle Winery was recently listed among the top 10 gold-medal winning wineries in the country, according to American Gold Medal Wines, 2006 Guide. The guide focuses on the top 20 international, national and regional wine competitions held in the United States and compiles a list of the top gold-medal earning wineries from those competitions. According to the guide’s publisher, this achievement “serves as an independent endorsement that you are part of an elite number of top wine producers—one of the top 10 wineries in the country!”
In addition to placing in the top-10 on the list, Eberle also earned honors for having 4 of the winningest wines in the country. Eberle received more gold medals for their 2002 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, 2003 Sangiovese, 2003 Mill Road Viognier and 2004 Roussanne than any other winery in the United States.
Eberle Winery is currently celebrating 26 years of fine winemaking in Paso Robles, California. Gary Eberle is long considered a founding father of the appellation and continues to promote the region on a national and international basis. California Wine Trends: Introducing White Rhône and Dry Rosé According to Gary Eberle, co-founder of the Paso Robles Appellation and Paso Robles winemaker for the past 30 years, the two major trends in California wine today are the emergence of Rhone whites and the desire for more dry rose’.
Eberle Winery has had the highest award winning Viognier in the state of California for three years in a row. Still, we spent the past few years explaining to people just what Viognier was and how to pronounce it (Vee-ON-Yay). Now, consumers seem much more savvy; they ask for Viognier by name and we quickly sold out of our last vintage.
Also, Roussanne (another white Rhone variety) is becoming a popular trend among wine consumers. Eberle made its first 150 cases of Roussanne last year and the wine sold out. We produced another 450 more cases of the 2004 vintage, which is also selling fast.
Another clear wine trend is that of the dry rose’s. Most Americans began to equate “pink wine” with “sweet wine” after the White Zinfandel revolution in the 1970’s. Today, people are realizing that a well-made dry rose’ goes well with practically any food. Eberle’s Syrah Rose’ is made from the free-run juice of our Steinbeck Syrah and, like the Viognier, was difficult to introduce to consumers. Today, we are quickly selling out of our Syrah Rose’ and the market place is proving that people are more willing to try a dry pink wine. |
